The first set of quintuplets to survive in the United States was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, earning the city the nickname of “Quint City, USA.” The Fischer quintuplets were born on September 14, 1963. They were a spontaneously occurring set of multiples, born without the use of fertility drugs. The four girls and one boy were named Mary Magdalene (Maggie), Mary Margaret (Margie), Mary Anne, Mary Catherine, and James Andrew (Jimmy). The births left the whole community with a sense pride, inspiring parades, banquets, national attention, and commemorative coins like the ones above. The bassinet was used by each of the infants during their stay in the hospital. |
