Umbrella

umbrellaumbrella

The origins of the umbrella have both religious and royal significance. The rounded canopy of the object symbolized the heavens for the ancient Greeks, and many sculptures depict rulers with umbrellas positioned overhead. The association is still recognized today in some religions. The typical view of the umbrella today is much less regal; however, using an umbrella to protect oneself from the elements was not immediately accepted. In the early 18th century, few umbrellas were used in places such as London, and only by women. Eventually, it became acceptable for a man to use the protective device, but only after a few brave souls endured the ridicule that accompanied men using umbrellas.
