Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater is being approached by conservative Republicans to consider a bid for the White House in 1964.

The University of Southern California Trojans have been voted the 1962 national collegiate football champions by the Associated Press sportswriters and broadcasters after recording a perfect 25-0 season. They are the first west coast team to receive the national honor since 1939.

“Big Girls Don’t Cry” by the Four Seasons is the nation’s best-selling record followed by “Elvis Presley’s “Return to Sender”

U.S. Marshals have been called to Mound City where a two-year battle between Mound City and Herried over the location of the county’s ASC office is coming to a head. The records are still in Mound City despite the office having been relocated to Herried.

A statewide recount is being held in the US Senate race between George McGovern and the Republican incumbent Joe Bottum. Initial results indicated McGovern to be victorious by a mere 326 votes.

Aberdeen Central High School theater students will present “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay” as their fall play. Students with leading roles include: Virginia Dixon, Daryl Skogmo, Doug Brewer and Mark Hogg. The play is directed by Carol Pratt.

Hosmer High School announced its honor roll for the second six-week period. Among those listed on the “A” honor roll is sophomore Bob Kiesz.

President Ronald Reagan praised George Bush as the “finest vice president ever” but would not endorse Bush or any other candidate in the presidential race until the convention selected its candidate.

Governor George Mickelson outlined his proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. He is calling for significant increases for education, care of the elderly and poor.

Dakota Wesleyan University announced $7 million campus improvement plan to include two new buildings, remodeling of existing buildings, closing off parts of two Mitchell streets entering the college grounds and developing a new main campus entrance.

A snowstorm crippled the east coast by dropping nearly 24 inches of snow that was driven by winds gusting to 45 mph. A commuter train stalled in a huge drift in New Jersey and the conductor walked a mile for help.

The Governor of Hawaii has asked for a nationwide fundraising effort to assist in building a shrine aboard the sunken battleship USS Arizona to mark the 16th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

- Yankton’s Bobby Stransky was named to the Associated Press All-American second team for his work on the University of Colorado’s football field. He has been drafted by the Baltimore Colts.

Mayor Cliff Hurlbert and the city commission have announced the hourly wage scale for city employees for 1958. They are: clerical workers $1.05; $1.40 for street department laborers, $1.60 for machine operators and $1.65 for mechanics.

A moment of silence was held at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base to mark the 42nd anniversary of the bombing that launched the US into WW II. The shipyard’s work whistle blew at 7:55 a.m., the exact minute the bombing attack took place on December 7, 1941.

The Cabbage Patch Kids were the toys to have this Christmas. Frenzied parents and grandparents all over the country stood in long lines and even engaged in in-store battles to capture one of these dolls, which were in short supply at every toy store.
