December 10, 1978

National Headlines:

  • President Jimmy Carter is considering deregulating the price of gasoline.  Currently drivers are paying 66 cents for a gallon of regular gas; 72 cents/gallon for premium grade; and 70 cents for unleaded
State Headlines:
  • Governor Elect Bill Janklow will break tradition and take his oath of office on New Year’s Day rather than on January 6 as originally scheduled.  According to Janklow, he needs these extra five days to get up to speed on the issues facing the state
Local Headlines:
  • Get the new Poloroid One Step Camera for just $26.88 at Artz Camera.  Stop by to see sample pictures and free demonstrations of this great camera.

  • Aberdeen Cable TV will give you free cable hookup when you donate a Christmas gift for a resident at the Redfield State Hospital.  (This offer is good only where cable is available)

  • Holiday specials at Osco Drug include a 40 channel CB radio for just $64.95 and a Fuzz Buster radar detector for $89.98. 

  • The Dance Machine bar and lounge is offering free disco dance lessons each evening beginning at 9:30pm

  • Northern’s talent entry in the 1979 Snow Queen Contest will be a group calling themselves “The Barbershop Quartet”.  Members of the group are:  Chuck Erhart, Craig Rostad, David Eckert, and Toby Roth.  All are music majors at Northern.

  • Tonight on TV:  The mini series “Centennial” continues and a hockey match between the Minnesota North Stars and the Boston Bruins.

December 11, 1958

National Headlines:

  • President Dwight Eisenhower is busy drafting his State of the Union speech to be delivered to the new Congress in January.    

  • The daily newspapers in New York City have stopped publication due to a strike by their delivery people.  The union asked for a wage increase of $10 per week and 40 pound bundles to replace the current 53 pounds newspaper bundles.  Talks between the union and management continue

State Headlines:
  • The highway patrol superintendent reminds motorists that car headlights must be adjusted prior to their receiving new licenses for the upcoming year.  A headlight inspection ticket must be presented in order to purchase new plates.

  • North Central Airlines has designated Mobridge as a stopping point on the Rapid City to Minneapolis route.  Only one problem--the airport at Mobridge does not have a runway long enough to handle commercial airliners. City officials are discussing possible funding options for airport improvement.

Local/Area Headlines:
  • In Cresbard Craig Kretchmar and Janet Holt were crowned to reign over the Comet Day activities.  The pair was crowned by outgoing royalty, Dale Melius and Lorene Cowick.  To culminate activities, the Cresbard basketball Comets played the Warner Monarchs.

  • Wayne Fischer has been hired by the Aberdeen Board of Education to teach mathematics at Central. Fischer just graduated from Northern and will assume his duties immediately.

  • A new girls city basketball league, the Powder Puff League, has been organized.  The four teams in the league will have a January - March season.

  • Ice Skating on the Moccasin Creek will be banned tomorrow so city crews can resurface the ice.

  • KSDN’s top 30 songs for this week include:  “I Got Stung” by Elvis Presley at number 1, “The Chipmunk Song” at number 4; “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” by the Platters at number 11; and “Yellow Bird” by the Mills Brothers at number 27.

  • Purchase an ID bracelet or ankle bracelet at Woolworths for 69 cents and have it engraved free.  Great gift for your sweetheart for Christmas.

  • A 12 oz. jar of Jif Peanut Butter is only 35 cents at the Economy Grocery.  They also are featuring round steak for 59 cents/pound; bacon 2 pounds for $1.09; and Indian River Grapefruit 3/29 cents.  Call in your order for free delivery.

December 12, 1973

National Headlines:

  • In response to the energy crisis, the US Senate’s Democratic and Republican leaders are giving up their limousines and shopping for smaller more fuel efficient cars.  They do however plan to keep their chauffeurs.

  • Astronaut John Glenn has announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for the US Senate from Ohio.  

State Headlines:
  • Rapid City will receive a $1.8 million grant from the US Department of Interior to rehabilitate about 2 miles of the Rapid City Floodway damaged in June of 1972.  Areas to be worked on include Canyon Lake, Storybook Island and Meadowbrook Golf Course.
Local/Area Headlines:
  • Gasless Sundays are having an effect on spring registration at Northern.  The school announced that because gas stations are closed on Sunday making Sunday travel difficult, student registration would begin at noon instead of 8am on Monday January 7.  Students can then leave home on Monday morning and still get to Aberdeen in time to register for classes.

  • Kiesz and Schmitt, a popular local band, is playing nightly at the Zebra Lounge.

  • Ben Franklin in downtown Aberdeen is offering a 2 pound holiday fruitcake for just 97 cents; and polyester doubleknit fabric for $1.97 per yard.

  • City League Basketball Score:  Engel Music over the Silver Dollar Bar 87 - 81.  Team players included--for Engels--Jim Stephenson, Gary Evjen, Skip Kurth, and Dave Graf.  For the Silver Dollar--Rhys Schmidt, Jory Tschetter, Dave Lehr and Dick Deacon.

  • Stop to see Jim Harr at Southside Imports and test drive a new 1973 Toyota Celica.  $3500 puts it in your garage.

December 13, 1967

National Headlines:

  • There are about 475,000 American men now fighting in Viet Nam. 

  • The US Congress is considering a bill to increase the minimum Social Security benefit payment from $44/month to $55/month and the maximum monthly payment from $142.00 to $160.50

State Headlines:
  • The state Game Fish & Parks Commission will reopen pheasant season for six days beginning December 26.  The special season will give service men home for the holidays a chance to hunt with their family and friends.
Local/Area Headlines:
  • Specials at Fairway Foods at Super City:  Banquet Pot Pies 6/99 cents; 2 pounds ButterNut Coffee $1.09; ground beef 48 cents/pound AND get a free Trini Lopez record with the purchase of a 6-pack of Fresca

  • Roncalli’s wrestlers will host Britton for the second match of the season.  Among the Cavalier wrestlers are:  Pat Steele at 103 pounds, Steve Ellerbusch at 120, Tom Sieler at 133 and Tom Schmidt at 154.

  • You may purchase your Christmas Seals at the First National Bank this year.

  • Candidates for Junior Snow Queen from Monroe Junior High are:  Becky Mitchell, Robin Smith, Valerie James and Polly Boyd. 

  • Get 2 pair of seamless nylons for 48 cents at Jupiter.

  • Pred’s Cloud Nine Terrace has the “Lynda Wedding Gown” copied after the gown worn by President Lyndon Johnson’s daughter Lynda at her recent White House wedding.  Price of the gown is $135.

December 14, 1951

National Headlines:

  • A study of college sports completed by the presidents of 10 nationally known colleges urges the elimination of post-season football bowl games.

  • President Truman in considering establishing an agency to fight corruption and clean up government!

  • Bicycle production may be cut by 50% next year due to the manufacturers inability to get enough steel.  More steel is allocated to those companies with defense contracts than those manufacturing other items.

State Headlines:
  • South Dakota’s attorney general recently ruled that police do have the authority to require a blood alcohol test on a criminal if he/she is suspected to be drunk.

Local/Area Headlines:
  • The Aberdeen Jaycees are seeking nominations for boss of the year.  To be considered, the man must employ at least one member of the Jaycees.  Past recipients include:  P.T. Spaulding of Spaulding Auto, Henry Schmitt of the American News and Fred Rush of the First National Bank.

  • Mr. & Mrs. Bud Malchow hosted a turkey dinner at the Mexican Room in the Sherman Hotel for the employees of Malchows and their spouses.

  • The Aberdeen Central A Capella Choir under the direction of Ron Prescott will be heard on a national radio broadcast aired locally on KSDN.  This is the second year this choir has been selected to participate in this concert of holiday music.

  • Last night thousands of people lined Aberdeen’s Main Street to watch the Christmas parade sponsored by the Jaycees.  Despite subzero temperatures, the crowd stayed to view over 40 floats.  After the parade, people gathered at the Civic Arena for caroling and refreshments.  John Berggren, music professor at Northern, led the singing.

  • On the RADIO tonight:  KSDN will broadcast the basketball game between the Aberdeen Central Eagles and Sioux Falls at 7:55pm.  Sponsors include:  DeVries Dairy, the Sherman Hotel and the Gorder Company
