December 17, 1989

Hot toy for Christmas this year--Oopsie Daisy doll that crawls, falls and cries!

National Headlines:

  • You will spend $5,774 for goods and services that your baby will require in its first year.  Compare that to 1958 when you would have spent $800.

  • The LA Dodgers have negotiated a one-year contract with their star left handed pitcher, Fernando Valenzuela.  Terms of the contract were not released, but Valenzuela will recieve a raise of $1.85 million.

State Headlines:

  • South Dakota video lottery players have spent $13 million in the 8 weeks since the games have been legal in the state.  The state’s share is $1 million.

  • Proponents of a state income tax are holding meetings to discuss the topic prior to the upcoming legislative session.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Aberdeen voters will decide next April whether or not to approve an additional penny sales tax which would raise an estimated $2 million annually to fund improvements at Wylie Park such as a children’s zoo, a bike trail, and a campground with restroom and shower facilties.

  • Barry Winkler has been named to the Dean’s list at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa.

  • The Aberdeen Police Department has four new officers:  Brad Carlson, Jeff Carlson, Brad Gardner and Stacey Nelson.

  • Aberdeen Central’s basketball Eagles defeated Pierre  81-59 last night.  Eric Kline put up 30 for Aberdeen.

  • Jason Uttermark of NSU won the college division of the Aberdeen Scholastic Open Chess Tournament that was held last week.

  • Sarge Grimes contributed 14 points to the NSU Wolves 105-70 win over Valley City last night. Included in those points were 2 of his crowd-pleasing two-handed dunks.

  • A 3 bedroom home 3 blocks from Simmons is selling for just $72,900.

  • Tonight on TV:  “Murder She Wrote”

National Headlines:

  • NASA has announced that the Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders will broadcast a message to the world from space on Christmas Eve.  The trio will be orbiting the moon during the broadcast and feature shots of the moon’s surface. 

  • The nation is in the midst of a flu epidemic.  The Red Cross is calling it a “disaster situation”.  Many public schools and colleges were closing early for the holidays because of this.

  • “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield is the top record today followed by Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life.”

State Headlines:

  • Governor Nils Boe is in the final days of his four year term as South Dakota’s governor.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Wayne Devries has been elected to head the St. Luke’s citizen’s advisory committee for the upcoming year.

  • Northern head football coach Clark Swisher announced his retirment and recommended his defensive coach, Jim Kretchman, be named as head coach for next season.

  • The Bowdle Bobcats scored their sixth basketball victory in seven starts.  Bowdle’s Curt Eisenbeisz had 10 points to help his Bobcats defeat Pollock 57-50.

  • Red Owl has what you need for your holiday feasts:  Baker’s chocolate chips 39 cents; Philadelphia brand creme cheese 33 cents; fancy ludefisk 45 cents/pound; Ocean Spray cranberry sauce 2 cans for 45 cents; one quart of egg nog 49 cents, Queen Anne chocolate covered cherries 39 cents.

Toy for this year:  Star Wars action figures

National Headlines:

  • The nation’s farm strike is in its second week.  Farmers are stiking for higher crop prices that would allow them to meet the cost of production and make a profit.

State Headlines:

  • A recent appeal for pledges raised $25,000 for South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • State Senator LeRoy Hoffman of Eureka will be visiting with students Northern and Presentation tomorrow.  He is campaigning to be the state’s Republican gubinatorial candidate.

  • Jerry Ochs, director of the public school audio-visual television service, announced that the Christmas programs held recently at local elementary schools will be broadcast on Cable Channel 7 next week.

  • Snowmobilers and ice fishermen on Richmond and Mina Lakes are being cautioned that there are still soft spots in the ice because of the year’s early snowfall. 

  • Aberdeen’s only indoor tennis court, Downtown Tennis Incorporated, opened yesterday.  It is located above Feinsteins.

  • The Lundstroms will host an evening of gospel music tonight at the Civic Theater.  Admission is free.

  • TV tonight:  “The Bob Hope Christmas Special” and “Maude”

 

December 20, 1984

Toy for this year:  Transformers

National Headlines:

  • Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers scored the 1000th point of his National Hockey League career last night in a game against the Los Angeles Kings.

State Headlines:

  • City officials in Mitchell are poisoning pigeons in an attempt to save the decorative murals on the Corn Palace. 

  • Last year the birds totally consumed one panel and half of two others.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Clark Engineering has moved into its new building at 1011 First Avenue SE.

  • Tickets are now on sale for the 1985 Snow Queen contest featuring entertainment by Bobbie VeeReserved seats are $7.00, general admission is $4.00

  • Jamestown College narrowly defeated the Northern basketball Wolves 79-75.  Wolves high point man was Scott Deadrick with 33, Todd Jordre added 14.

  • See Eddie Murphy in “Beverly Hills Cop” at the Cinema Twin Theaters.

  • Tonight on TV:  Barbara Walters interviews Jean Harris who was convicted of murdering her boyfriend, Herman Tarnower, creator of the Scarsdale Diet.  Also on:  “Hart to Hart”, “Cheers” and “Night Court”.

 

December 21, 1964

This Year’s New Toy:  G.I. Joe Doll

National Headlines:

  • 100 mph winds roared through Boulder, Colorado lifting roofs off homes, downing fences and power lines and collapsing a wall at the Unviersity of Colorado’s Cyclotron Building.  This was part of a massive storm system that traveled through the western US causing major damage in many areas.

State Headlines:

  • Once year end figures are tallied, economists expect South Dakota’s average personal income figure for 1964 to top the 1963 mark of $1,886.00

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Let the staff at Burckhard’s Northside Bakery take care of your holiday baking needs this year, simply phone in your order for next day pickup.

  • Aberdeen attorney, Stan Siegel, was elected to the executive board of the newly formed South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association.

  • Several college students picketed downtown stores to protest the merchants’ new policy to be open on Sunday afternoons.

  • “A Hard Day’s Night” starring the Beatles is showing at the Orpheum Theater; The Pleasure Seekers” starring Ann Margaret and Tony Franciosa is playing at the Capitol.

  • Included on the Top 20 Hits this week:  “Mr. Lonely” by Bobbie Vinton, “Leader of the Pack” by the Shangrilas, “Try to Remember” by Ed Ames, and “Dance, Dance, Dance” by the Beach Boys.  Engel Music has all these and more in 45 rpm format for only 88 cents each.
