November 1, 1989

National Headlines:

  • Agreement reached on $4.25 minimum wage—The Bush administration agreed with Democratic congressional leaders to implement this raise by April 1991—the first minimum wage increase since 1981!!
  • Tammy Faye Baker was spotted in Talladega Alabama, home of the Federal Correctional Facility where her husband Jim is doing time for defrauding members of his PTL Club.

State Headlines:

  • Let the Games Begin!  Today marks the first day of legalized gambling in Deadwood. Games allowed by law include limited poker, blackjack and slot machines.
  • Happy Birthday South Dakota!  Final plans are complete for tomorrow’s celebration of South Dakota’s 100th anniversary as a state.  At precisely 2:40pm (CST) bells from churches and schools all across the state will peal to mark the exact time on November 2, 1889 that President Benjamin Harrison signed the statehood proclamation for South Dakota. 

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Conde—Plan to attend the turkey supper sponsored by St. John’s Parish.  There will also be a fish pond and country store.
  • Gettysburg is hosting its craft fair on Saturday.  Items for sale include woodcrafts, toys and needlework.  There is a $10 registration fee for artisans.
  • The NSU Campus Activity Board announced it is sponsoring a contest to develop a new logo for the school to reflect its new status as a university.

  • The Warner girl’s basketball team defeated the Hecla girls 72-36.  Warner’s high scorer—Tracy Hase with 19, Dawn Wampler led Hecla’s scoring with 16.

  • Cresbard’s Nikki Ortmeier led her Comets to a 58-51 win over Bowdle with 17 points.  Jodi Graves and Julie Toennies added 15 and 13 points respectively to the Cresbard total.  Jamie Fiechtner put up 21 points for Bowdle.

  • The Farmers & Merchants Bank is offering a 6-month CD with 8.45% interest

  • Toshiba Dual Cassette Boomboxes on sale at Shopko for $99.99
  • Watch Doogie Howser, MD tonight at 8:00pm on KABY

 

November 2, 1960

National Headline:

  • Confetti Storm Hits N.Y. as Ike Joins Nixon Drive—President Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower is campaigning in NY City for Richard Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge—Republican Candidates for president and vice president.

State Headline:

  • South Dakota expects to have spent $50 million on road building and repair this year.  Some of these funds came from federal government highway grants awarded to SD.

Local/Area Headlines

  • The Billy Graham Crusade attracted a crowd of 4000 to the civic arena.  The Aberdeen Ministerial Ass’n, Rev. Harold Salem chairman, sponsored the event.
  • The Magnificent 7” starring Yul Brynner & Steve McQueen is showing at the Orpheum Theater
  • Walt Disney’s “Jungle Cat” is showing at the Capitol
  • The Arcola Grocery has butter for $.59 a pound through the end of the week.
  • Roslyn—C.J. Coyne, president of the Roslyn Booster Club, announced that the stores will be closed Saturday evenings beginning November 12.  All prize drawings will be held on Saturday afternoons rather than in the evenings from then on.
  • Darwin Walker, music director in Bristol, said the music boosters will begin to raise funds to purchase 10 new band uniforms.
  • Buy one bag of Kraft Mini Marshmallows for $.29 at Kesslers today and get 50 extra Gold Bond Stamps.
