November 5, 1946
National Headline:
- 36-Hour Snow Abates—A snowstorm blanketed Denver and most of Colorado with more that 16 inches of snow. Some drifts in Denver were 20 feet deep. Streetcars and taxis refused to drive there today.
State Headline:
- Don’t Spoil Your Ballots—Check the Rules before You Vote. You will be given 4 paper ballots, read the instructions on each carefully. Fold each separately and
place them in the ballot box after you have voted. Ballots folded together will slow the counting process.
Local/Area Headlines:
- Aberdeen has new “cop car” A black Pontiac 8 cylinder sedan patrol car has been purchased for the Aberdeen police department at a cost of $389 plus the trade in allowance from a 1942 Dodge patrol car now in use.
- Sacred Heart school won the annual football game between Aberdeen’s two parochial schools downing St. Mary’s 12-7 at Johnson Field on the campus of Northern State.
- The Brentford Braves defeated the Ashton Cardinals 29-18 in the opening basketball game (boys no girls basketball at the time) of the season last night in Brentford.
- Aberdeen’s Kiwanis Club voted to support the “Westport Dam” project, which would control the flow of water from the Elm and James Rivers after the group heard presentations for and against the project.
- 18 nurses completed their course work at St. Luke’s Hospital and were “capped” in a ceremony last evening.. The Rev. Fr. William Cracknell was the featured speaker for the event
- Fly from Aberdeen to Kansas City for just $27.30 on Mid-Continent Airlines.
November 6, 1978 (Monday that year)
National Headline:
- Americans are indifferent to Tuesday’s elections. Associated Press-NBC News poll indicates that 48% of those responding said their lives will be neither better nor worse no matter who wins the election. Voter turnout is expected to be only 33% of the 155.5 million Americans eligible to vote.
State Headlines:
- The vote for Oahe sub-district board of directors is one of the most important ballot issues facing SD voters tomorrow. In the Aberdeen area Jim Sperry of Bath is running against incumbent John Sieh of rural Groton.
- Republican Leo Thorsness and Democrat Tom Daschle are vying for South Dakota’s First District Congressional Seat.
Local/Area Headlines:
- Aberdeen’s second Pizza Hut at 405 NW Hwy 281 is celebrating its Grand Opening with $1.00 off any medium pizza and $2.00 off any large pizza.

- Girls Basketball--Britton defeated Groton 45-19 in a non-conference game hosted by Groton. Jodi St. Sauver was Britton’s high scorer with 21.

- Today’s special at the Hour Glass Cleaners (14 SE 2nd Ave)--shirts laundered for $.35 each.
- The Langford Lions wrapped up their second straight Lake Region Conference football title with an impressive 6-0 record. Calvin Aas is their head coach.
- “National Lampoon’s Animal House” is in its 2nd big week at the Cinema 2 theater.
November 7, 1966
National Headline:
- The Viet Cong Slip Away Into the Jungle: The American sweep of the enemy stronghold began Oct. 15 but pitched fighting did not develop until last week. Some US units were hard hit in the 4-day engagement.
State Headline:
- South Dakota’s corn crop is about 45% harvested according to officials in the Crop Reporting Service. This compares to about 35% one year ago. However in a normal year around 60% is in the bin by now.
- Watertown—Police there are looking for thieves who took musical instruments valued at $1,050 from a locked car Friday night. The vandals broke the car’s rear window and then used a coat hanger to unlock the doors. The instruments belonged to musicians in town for the annual All-State Chorus and Orchestra concert. Stolen were a $250 flute and 2 $400 clarinets.
Local/Area Headlines:
- Officials are looking for thieves who struck an Ipswich filling station and took loot valued at $2,350--$800 was cash.

- Drivers were cautioned to take care due to icy roads in the area today.

- Motorcycle safety will be the topic of the November meeting of the Aberdeen Ringneck Riders. All riders area welcome and encouraged to attend the monthly meetings of the group.

- A four-bedroom home near St. Mary’s is available for $6,500.00
- Joan Brown, an Onida HS senior, was crowned the new “Junior Miss” for the Gettysburg area on Saturday. She will compete in the State Junior Miss contest next year.
- Northern football coach Clark Swisher expects Wolves halfbacks Doug McLaughlin and Roger Hisek to be ready for Saturday’s game against Kearney NE. Both were injured in last week’s game against Huron.

National Headlines:
- Douglas Ginsburg withdraws Supreme Court nomination: Ginsburg asked President Ronald Reagan to withdraw his name from consideration for appointment to the highest court because he feels his views on the law have been overshadowed by the nation’s focus on his past marijuana smoking.
- 100 fires are still burning in the 13 southern states from Texas to Virginia This condition has been aggravated by a lingering draught in the area combined with recent high winds and newly fallen dry leaves and branches. 157,000 acres have burned since mid October.
State Headline:
- Yankton residents are divided on whether to sell the buildings of the now defunct Yankton College to the federal government to house 300 – 500 prisoners convicted of crimes such as tax evasion and drug dealing. Residents will vote on the matter on December 15.

Jim Barringer, executive vice president of Aberdeen’s Development Corporation, has completed his first year in that position and reminds businesses looking to expand that 53 acres of land are available for development in Aberdeen’s Industrial Park.

Aberdeen’s Civic Arena will host the American Wrestling Association’s All Star Wrestling tour featuring Chief Wahoo McDanial, Greg Gagen, Curt Henning and Ray “The Crippler” Stevens. General admission tickets are $9.00

Aberdeen third graders will learn computer-keyboarding beginning next semester as part of a pilot program in the public school system.

The Aberdeen Area Arts Council is hosting the Black & White Bash at the Holiday Inn Convention Center as a fundraiser. Aberdeen’s own Black Velvet Band will provide dance music. Tickets are $10.00 each.
- Warner science teacher, Janet Palmer, has won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Palmer has been teaching at Warner for 10 years. She received a computer, a calculator and many books as a result of the award.
November 9, 1958
National Headline:
- Air Force studies failed space mission: The third and final attempt by the Air Force to place a satellite around the moon failed at an altitude of 1000 miles, far short of its 200,000 mile target. The Army moon probers are anxious to have an opportunity to have their chance to successfully attempt a moon satellite mission in early December.
State Headlines:
- Ralph Herseth is South Dakota’s newly elected governor. He and his family operate a ranch near Houghton.
- Rapid City—The launch of the strato-lab balloon that will take a closer look at Mars has been delayed once again. Navy officials will attempt the launch later this week.

The King Pin Bowling Lanes have organized two new bowling leagues for junior high girls. Girls from Monroe Junior High will bowl on Mondays at 4:15pm and the girls from Simmons Junior High will bowl at the same time on Tuesdays.

The Wolves from Northern State Teachers College defeated the Pointers from Southern Teachers College 13-0 to regain the South Dakota Intercollegiate football championship. Jim Vogt and Bob Beattie scored touchdowns for the Wolves.

Aberdeen’s Central men’s basketball team will begin practice this week under the direction of head coach Milo Jackson. Returning lettermen include Chuck Carrier, Tom Dahl, Tom Teigen, Bil Jahraus and Kenny Kraft. Tom Malchow who stands just under 6’6” is one of the team’s new talents for this year.
