November 19, 1978

National Headlines:

  • The head of Iran’s 2-week old military government promised he would restore calm to this strife-torn nation “by a decisive, fast and practical campaign to weed out corruption.”

  • Mickey Mouse turned 50 years old yesterday.  He first appeared in “Steamboat Willie”, the first sound cartoon.

State Headlines:
  • Republican George S. Mickelson has been chosen as the speaker of the House for the upcoming SD legislative session.
Local/Area Headlines:
  • Theresa Patnoe is the new Miss Aberdeen

  • Country music legends Merle Haggard and Marty Robbins are in concert tonight at the Civic Arena.  Reserved seats are $7.50. The concert is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police.

  • Roncalli theater students are rehearsing for the opening of “The Importance of Being Earnest”.  Sister Pam Donelan is the director.

  • The NSC music department is rehearsing for the annual performance of the Messiah. Among the soloists announced by Dr. John Berggren, choral director, are:  Jayne Labesky (Herther), Susan White (Van Dover), Melledy Miller (Rostad), and Dean Peterson.

  • TV tonight: “All in the Family” “Alice” and “The Merv Griffin Show”

 

November 20, 1966

National Headlines:

  • President Lyndon Baines Johnson is recuperating from surgeries to remove a lump from his vocal cords and repair an intestinal hernia. 

  • Republican E. Y. Berry, one of SD’s US Representatives, is in Cairo Egypt with 3 other Congressmen on a fact finding mission.

State Headlines:

  • First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, has been invited to address the annual banquet meeting of the Keep South Dakota Beautiful organization to be held in Pierre.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Coach Bob Wachs and his basketball Wolves lost their season opener to Mayville State in a nail biter with a final score of 87-86.  Wolves high scorers were Jim Schlekeway with 29 and Bob Graham with 21.

  • Carl Anderson has joined the Robertson-Anderson Insurance Agency to work with his father Cliff.

  • Aberdeen YMCA’s running team comprised of 25 business and professional men are in 6th place in a 3,000 mile marathon that began October 31.  There are teams from 20 other Y’s from around the country in the race. Chuck Trebilcock leads local runners having put in 101 miles already.

  • Aberdeen Central High School wrestling coach Lee Wolf will have the following lettermen returning to his squad this year:  Roger Ingebritson, Doug Neuharth, Craig Hayes, and Kerry Johnston.

  • Stop at the Blue Buffalo Drive-Inn at 1401 6th Ave SW to get a foot long hot dog for a penny when you buy one at regular price (25 cents)

  • Sandra Robertson is Redfield’s new Snow Queen.  Pam Lovett will represent Redfield in the talent portion of the state Snow Queen contest in January.

 

November 21, 1988

National Headlines:

  • Nearly two dozen tornadoes ripped through the South.  One cut a mile-long path through a Tuscaloosa, Alabama neighborhood.

  • Canada is voting on a free trade agreement with the US today.  If passed it would eliminate the trade tariffs between the US and Canada over the next 10 years.

State Headlines:

  • The SD legislature will consider a proposition to increase the state’s teachers salaries. The minimum salary level would be raised to $16,000 annually.

  • Aberdeen remains the third largest city in the state with a population of 25,670.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Mrs. Sheila Von Wald’s sixth grade class at St. Anthony’s School in Hoven enjoyed prune kuchen today as part of their celebration of Pioneer Days. 

  • Phil Baker entertained the youngsters attending Winterfest in Aberdeen.

  • The Aberdeen traveling PeeWee Hockey team (the Blue Blades) were victorious over the Bismarck Blue team 3-0.  Jeff Lamont had two goals in the match.

  • Watch “Murphy Brown” tonight.

 

November 22, 1969

National Headlines:

  • Apollo 12 moon explorers, Pete Conrad, Richard Gordon and Allan Bean have completed their mission and are heading back to earth for a November 24 splashdown near American Samoa in the Pacific Ocean.

  • Thousands of people are expected to visit the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy who was assassinated six years ago today.

State Headlines:

  • Miners at South Dakota’s Homestake Gold Mine in Lead are threatening to strike if their union cannot renegotiate increased salaries and benefits for the miners.

Local/Area Headlines

  • Work on the “Park-N-Shop” project to provide elevated roof top parking at the corner of 3rd Ave and S. Main Street continues.  Access to the lot is south of the Orpheum Theater on Lincoln Street.

  • Aberdeen Central football coach Don Reshetar announced that 24 seniors including Curt Fredrickson, Jeree Meyers, and Randy Finwall would be receiving letters for the 1969 season. The team tied for second place in the ESD conference with a 5-2 record.

  • Bob Styles and the Country Swingers are playing tonight at the Firehouse Lounge in the Village Bowl.

  • Enjoy Swiss Steak or Deep Fried Chicken for $1.39 at the White Drug Patio in the Super City Shopping Center.

  • Tonight on TV:  “My Three Sons”, “Jackie Gleason”, “Green Acres”, “Petticoat Junction” and “Mannix”

  • Java defeated McIntosh 84-66 in a non-conference basketball game—Doug Schlepp scored 30 for Java, Terry Steel led McIntosh with 21. 

 

November 23, 1987

National Headlines:

  • A group of veteran rock stars including Crosby, Stills and Nash, raised over $100,000 in a live radio fundraiser to benefit the world’s starving children.

  • The Vikings used 3 quarterbacks (Tommy Kramer, Wade Wilson and rookie Rich Gannon) in their win over the Atlanta Falcons today.

State Headlines:

  • A statewide survey of 50 gas stations revealed gas prices had dropped 3 and a half cents  per gallon in the last three months.  Average gas prices were $1.12 for unleaded and $1.27 for premium unleaded at full service stations while self-serve stations had unleaded for $.98 and premium unleaded for $1.08.       

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Levi’s 501 whitewashed jeans have just arrived at The Main.

  • NSU music instructor Jamal Rossi will direct the NSU jazz ensemble in its fall concert at the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

  • Dacktronics Inc. of Brookings has completed work on a new electronic scoreboard to be installed at NSU’s Barnett Center.  The design enables the board to display simultaneously all players and corresponding fouls--a first for the Dactronics company. 

  • Aberdeen’s city commissioners passed an ordinance that requires city residents to clean their walks after each snowfall or face a fine of $100.

  • Tonight’s TV line-up:  “Macgyver”, “Designing Women”, “Cagney & Lacey”
