A study by a New York state taxpayers group indicates South Dakota ranks 33rd in the nation in average per capita state and local taxes. South Dakotans pay an average of $548.00 in state and local taxes. New York state has the highest average at $1,008.79 in state and local taxes paid per capita.

- Holiday traffic in Lead and the northern Black Hills was snarled by 18 to 22 inches of new snow. Rapid City reported only 3 inches of new snow.

John Kennedy and wife Jackie welcomed son, John Jr., into their family yesterday.

Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish football team broke an 8 game losing streak by beating the USC Trojans 17-0.
State Headlines:
- South Dakota Senator and Mrs. Karl Mundt have been appointed by Vice President Richard Nixon to represent the US at the dedication of the Memorial Cemetary and Monument in Manila. The Monument honors US soldiers buried in the foreign cemetery.

The O’Sell Trio (Jayne Sellevold, Bonnie and Kathleen Opitz) won the talent contest at the Roslyn Snow Queen Contest and will go on to compete in the state contest in January.

The Bowdle High School football team completed their season with a record of 6-2 to rank third in the Hiddenwood Conference.

Sonja Werner was crowed Eureka’s Snow Queen and Jane Heier was crowned the Selby Snow Queen.

Students and staff at Northern State Teacher’s College have been discussing a new name for the school. Northern’s president, J. Howard Kramer, will suggest to the Board of Regents that the name be changed to Northern State College. Other names discussed on campus were: Northern State South Dakota College; Aberdeen State College, and South Dakota State College of Aberdeen.

“Ben Hur” is in its 3rd big week at the Capitol Theater.

- Santa Ana winds gusting to 100 miles per hour hampered fire fighting efforts in California. Nearly 20,000 acres have burned and 271 structures have been lost in the Panorama fire near San Bernadino.

- Governor William Janklow says he will finish his four-year term rather than take a job in the Reagan administration, possibly as ass’t attorney general or as the solicitor general.

Cape Canaveral will now be known as Cape Kennedy to honor the recently assassinated present John F. Kennedy.

Jack Ruby, who shot accused Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald as thousands watched on television, may go on trial as early as December 9.

State Headlines:
- Beginning teachers in the Haakon County (Phillip, SD) School District will be paid $11,940 a year. This was a compromise that the union agreed to—they had asked that base pay be $12,000 annually.

- The Ipswich Tigers girls’ basketball team will travel to the Corn Palace to play in the state B tournament.

The Hecla Community Choir is preparing for a concert in Oakes, North Dakota. The choir consists of 40 singers from Hecla, Houghton, Claremont, Frederick and Oakes.

Roncalli’s girls’ basketball team advanced to the final round of sectional tournaments with a 61-57 win over Huron. High scorer for the Cavaliers was Brenda Traphagen with 23. Teammate Renita Vincent added 18 to the Cavalier effort.
