1970s Toys and Games
(February 1, 2010 - February 24, 2010) Muppets

The Dacotah Prairie Museum announced a series of exhibits on 2nd floor showcasing the 1970s. The exhibits commemorated the 40th Anniversary of the Museum in its present home at 21 South Main Street. The first installment of this revolving display was called “1970s Toys and Games.” The exhibit featured a wide variety of toys that were released in the 1970s for the very first time.

With “fad” toys of the decade like the flatsy dolls, Strawberry Shortcake, and stuffed smiley faces begging us to “have a happy day”, the 70s were a unique time to be a kid. 1976 was the premier year for the “Muppet Show” and Jim Hensen’s lovable puppets became inseparable with childhood. The Fisher/Price Toy Company had been around since 1930, but the 1970 brought untold expansion to the company worldwide. Classics like the Fisher/Price airport, airplane, farm, cars, and trains became a staple in every pre-schooler’s home. Fantasy Island Game, etcTheir cow on wheels that was pulled by a toddler with the string was recognized in city or country.

Who could grow up in the 1970s and not remember their first Etch o Sketch or Lite Bright toy of technology? Or their low-tech games of Master Mind, Boggle or Cheery-O? Boys and Girls still enjoyed “traditional” fun in the 1970s like toy sewing machines and racecars, but with a new look.

Whether you grew up in the 70s, had your children in the 70s, or have never heard of the 70s, you will be sure to have a “groovy, radical” time at the Dacotah Prairie Museum and the 1970s Toys and Game Exhibit!
