Aberdeen Area China Artists Exhibit

Fruit and flowersThe Dacotah Prairie museum proudly announced the summer exhibit of the Aberdeen Area China Artists.

The Aberdeen area group was organized more than 10 years ago, with some members painting together as long as 20 years. The organized group became a way for China painters to meet, work together and exchange ideas of their craft. They also exhibit their works at a number of local and regional shows and competitions as well as providing a yearly display at the Museum.

Members that participated in this year’s summer porcelain exhibit at the Dacotah Prairie include: Signe Bruers, Hazel Engle, Avis Hansen, Lila Hansen, Corrine Hunstad, Sally Mettler Kushman, Helen Moulton, Arlene Munger, Kathy North, Alma Sonnenfeld, and Karen Tupa.

Each piece of hand-painted porcelain follows a technique developed over 2000 years ago. Paints used are mineral and oxide powders that are ground with an oil medium to a paste consistency. The design is then painted on the slick-glazed surface of white china. It will be painted several times to arrive at the depth of detail it portrays and each time it is fired in a kiln at about 1500 degrees. When cooled, the design is under the glazed surface of the porcelain.
