Prairie Stitchers Exhibit
(November 17 - December 29, 2009)
The “Prairie Stitchers” Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of America presented an exhibit of stitching excellence at the Dacotah Prairie Museum. The show was the galleries on 2nd floor from November 17 through December 29, 2009. Viewers appreciated this showcase of needlework talent whether they were stitchers or not.
The goal of the Embroidery Guild of America is “to advance an interest in decorative needlework such as embroidery, pulled thread, hardanger, counted cross stitch, blackwork, and Brazilian embroidery in order to preserve the heritage of embroidery as an art form.”
The Prairie Stitchers were organized in 1990 and currently meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in the employee’s lounge of the Brown County Courthouse. Membership in the group is open to everyone, no matter what your stitching skill level. The meetings provide everyone the opportunity to learn new skills and work on personal projects. In addition, the group works on a “Stitch of the Month”, which is provided by the Embroidery Guild of America to further the educational aspect of the group’s purpose. Anyone interested in stitching is invited to come and try a meeting.
Members of the group whose work was featured in the exhibit are: Jayne Knutson, Laura Kramp, Karen Swenson, Mikki Fried, Jean M. Schaffer, Marie Sternhagen, and Trudy Anderson. The Stitchers also have composed two baskets overflowing with needlecraft to give away. Chances were $1 at the front desk of the Museum and they entitled one to win to a basket full of embroidered towels, bookmarks, framed pictures tree ornaments, napkins, table runners, and window hangings. The two baskets were given away on the last day of the exhibit, December 29, 2009.
