Peter Lutgen:“Reunion 2004: Oils, Watercolors & Prints”

Peter LutgenThe Dacotah Prairie Museum displayed a new fine arts exhibition that featured the work of former area resident, Peter Lutgen of Denver, Colorado. The exhibit was entitled,“ Reunion, 2004” and featured an overview of Peter’s paintings and prints since about 1990.

Peter was born in Britton, SD, but raised at Richmond Lake, near Aberdeen, a childhood which began his love of art and continues to influence his painting styles. Peter relates: “The magnificent sunsets on the water and the slalom skier’s rainbows at dusk helped develop my visual sensitivity to light, reflections, and the inherent beauty of those years growing up in a wonderfully rich and nurturing landscape.”

Peter LutgenPeter Lutgen now lives in Arvada, CO., in the Denver area. He has divided his time between working as an artist, as a graphic specialist for Keyline Graphic in Denver, and as a art teacher for the Jefferson County Schools in Arvada. “Reunion, 2004” marks his first solo exhibition in the Aberdeen area, an opportunity for which he says he is honored. While here for the exhibit and reception, Peter will also visit family and friends and enjoy some vacation time.

Peter describes“Reunion, 2004” in these words: “This visual event will include large Peter Lutgenscale brightly colored environmental paintings, inviting landscape paintings, prints and watercolors and vibrant monotypes...for me painting has always been about simplicity. My subjects are scenes from everyday life...I have always been fascinated by how light affects a surface and object. Color, shadow and reflections are greatly influenced by the character of direct sunlight. Just seeing this inspires me to paint.”

The display was located in the Lamont Gallery on 2nd floor with two large pieces hanging in the Helen Bergh Education Room.   The exhibit opened on Tuesday, June 22,  2004 and remained opened until August 7, 2004.
