Gallery E-3 – Lakota Life
Here you'll find a representation of a young Lakota couple with their baby inside their tipi. Both are dressed in authentic Lakota styles including their hair. The wife is busy preparing the evening meal and the husband is relaxing against his willow backrest after a day of hunting. Note the baby in the cradleboard against the back of the tipi. This device was used to keep the little one safe and out of the way, much like our baby carriers of today. The cattails were used for padding for diapers. The tipi liner tells the story of the husband hunting, taking horses from the soldiers and other brave acts. The liner also served as an insulation barrier for the tipi, making it much warmer in the winter.
