2013 Children’s Exhibits Now Open at DPM
(February 8 - April 7, 2013)

The 2013 Children’s Exhibits are now open at the Dacotah Prairie Museum.  This perennial winter favorite features two interactive exhibits rented from the Discovery Center in Pierre, South Dakota, as well as the Frontier Town Life exhibit created by local museum staff.

Children can experience “Light and Color” in the Lamont Gallery.  The exhibit features 18 stations which each explores a different concept about light and color.  These activities will help kids understand the science behind light and color as they learn about holograms, prisms, and meet Roy G. Biv (the order of colors in a rainbow.)  One station offers a variety of disks painted with two colors, which when spun create a new “blended” color.  Children can also experience how a periscope works plus lots more.

The other new exhibit is entitled “Animals As Architects” and offers many opportunities for learning how some of our animal friends build their homes and shelters.  bird's nestChildren can build their own life sized bird’s nest; create a spider web; explore the inside of an African Termite mounds, and use several large floor puzzles to discover the underground structures of a prairie dog town.

The two traveling exhibits are part of the HOP (Hands On Partnerships) for science, literature and art in South Dakota.  The activities and exhibits were developed by these partners: the SD School of Mines and Technology, the SD Arts Council and the Discovery Center of SD.  They are sponsored locally by the Dacotah Prairie Museum Foundation through its annual membership campaign.termite hill
